How to operate your ATM


Most retail ATM machines are similar, making it easy for customers to understand how to use them. Still, if someone is new to using them or is not sure how to perform a transaction, here are the basic steps involved in using an ATM:

  1. Insert a debit or credit card into the machine to begin the transaction. The machine will usually keep the card throughout the transaction and return it when the customer has completed all transactions. Debit cards are the most commonly used cards, though some credit cards offer cash advance options. Customers should be aware that credit cards often charge fees for cash advances.
  2. A language option is available on most ATMs to allow customers to select their native language and help them process transactions quickly. If you own an ATM in an area where multiple languages are spoken, you should ensure those languages are available on your retail ATM machine.
  3. Customers will be required to enter their Personal Identification Number (PIN). This is typically four digits but might be longer. Customers will not be allowed to perform any transactions without this PIN. If they do not remember it, they must contact their bank for help in recovering it.
  4. After entering a PIN, customers will need to select the service they require, such as withdrawing money from a checking account, withdrawing money from a savings account, checking balance, etc.
  5. The customer will need to agree to the service fee before proceeding further. This is the fee you’ve set to generate revenue for your business. This feel is typically between $2 and $3 but can be as high as $5.
  6. Once the customer agrees to their fee, their transaction will be processed, and money will be dispensed. However, in some cases, their transaction may be declined. This could be due to insufficient funds in the machine, inadequate funds in their bank account, or because their bank has blocked the transaction.
  7. Once the transaction is complete, customers can choose whether they want a receipt showing their balance and transaction details.
  8. The ATM will then return the card. If the customer has chosen a cash withdrawal, they will need to collect their money.

Withdrawal


Customers can choose fast cash, allowing for a quick withdrawal in set amounts labeled on the machine’s screen. Withdrawals will be limited to the cash available in the machines (for example, only multiples of 10) and the daily withdrawal limit their bank has placed on their account and debit card.

Deposit


Many ATMs offer customers the chance to deposit money or checks by feeding it straight into the machine. For older machines, sometimes a deposit envelope and slip are required. It’s the owner’s responsibility to ensure they load these into the ATM. If it’s a modern ATM, it will automatically count large stacks of bills and won’t require an envelope.

Check account balance


Many people use ATMs to check how much they have in their account balance, either displayed on-screen or printed on a receipt. This can be helpful to know how much is available to withdraw.
